5/24/21:Time TBD “Monmouth Law Day: Qualified Immunity and the Evolution of Pierson v. Ray
Professor Alexis Karteron (Rutgers School of Law – Newark) and Professor Sara Ricks (Rutgers School of Law – Camden) will co-present.
- The session with discuss the doctrine of qualified immunity and its constitutional origins, evolving tests and scrutiny applied in qualified immunity cases, and current case precedent.
- Law Professors with experience litigating in the area of qualified immunity will present both plaintiff’s and defendant’s perspectives on the application of the doctrine of qualified immunity in 2021

“A Profile in Trans-Advocacy: Pauli Murray’s Efforts to End “Jane Crow” and Reform of States Laws on Race and Color”
- his session will discuss the groundbreaking equal protection arguments created by African American trans-lawyer, law professor, and Episcopal priest, Pauli Murray, Esq.
- Presenters will discuss why Murray is considered a trans-advocate by historians
- Pauli Murray was holding lunch counter sit-ins, nearly 20 years before the lunch counter sit-ins of the 1960’s. Raised in the “Jim Crow” south, Murray became the first black deputy attorney general in California in 1946, the first African American to receive a law doctorate from Yale Law School in 1965, the first professor to teach African-American and women’s studies courses at Brandeis University in 1968, and the first African-American woman to be ordained as an Episcopal priest in 1977.
