“Trust But Verify: Generative Artificial Intelligence and Attorney Ethics”: No-Cost Virtual CLE Program

The Judiciary will offer a free virtual real-time continuing legal education (CLE) program focused on attorney ethics and the use of artificial intelligence in legal practice. “Trust But Verify: Generative Artificial Intelligence and Attorney Ethics” will provide practical guidance on the responsible use of artificial intelligence with particular attention to the serious risks posed by non-existent or hallucinated citations and similar errors that can occur with generative AI (GAI).

The program will take place on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (EDT). The program will be offered live in a virtual format on the Zoom Webinar platform. This program will offer 1.5 credits in ethics/professionalism through the Judiciary Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement Program (Provider #1720).

Advance registration is required online using this link. Registration will be confirmed via email from CCR.Webinar1@njcourts.gov.

The program will address the ethics of artificial intelligence in professional legal practice with a focus on:

  • steps attorneys should take to avoid submission to the court of non-existent or hallucinated case citations if the attorney or others involved in preparation of the submission use generative AI; and
  • steps attorneys should take if they realize that a submission already filed with the court contains non-existent or hallucinated citations or other similar errors.

The presenters will include Morris/Sussex Vicinage Assignment Judge Stuart Minkowitz; Johnson & Johnson General Counsel Natalya Johnson, Esq.; and Statewide Ethics Coordinator for the Office of Attorney Ethics Ryan J. Moriarty, Esq. The program will be moderated by Special Assistant to the Administrative Director Jessica Lewis Kelly, Esq.

Questions about registering for the program should be communicated via email to diversity.mailbox@njcourts.gov. Questions about attorney use of GAI should be directed to Court-Use-of-AI.mbx@njcourts.gov.
